Lecture on the use of VHF Radio at the MCAST Campus
February 23 @ 19:00 - 21:00
Our next event this year is a lecture at the MCAST Campus in Paola. This event is being held at the Institute of Engineering and Transport – Centre for Maritime Studies Home Courses on the MCAST Campus on Friday 23rd February 2024 at 7:00 pm.
Visiting the Centre for Maritime Studies will also give you the opportunity to see the superb modern facilities the Institute has available for persons who intend to study for any maritime career. The Institute also has a sophisticated maritime simulator used to train students in navigation of commercial vessels.
For the lecture on Friday 23rd February, the main subject will be a lecture by Captain Stephen Farrugia AFM (Ret'd) on the fundamentals of VHF communications at sea. Captain Farrugia is responsible for training the MCAST Students in the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) which is a worldwide system for automated emergency signal communication for ships at sea developed by the United Nations' International Maritime Organisation (IMO) as part of the SOLAS Convention.
By way of introduction, before the lecture, there will be a brief outline of the various courses that MCAST offers to the pleasure boating community. You will also be able to ask questions on the local current boating license required to operate a pleasure boat and on the future legislation in the pipeline that will regulate the issue of licences.
The lecture will take about 90 minutes in all and the Malta Cruising Club will be taking on the cost of this lecture and the conference hall facilities. Attendance will be free of charge to all members of the Club.
HOW GET THERE
The best way to get there by car is to follow the red line on the map below and park in the underground car part of the MCAST Campus (indicated by the red arrow). Once parked, get the lift one floor up to the Students House and exit to the pedestrian area opposite the Students' House.
Thereafter, please follow the dotted blue line on the same map to the Institute of Engineering and Transport - Maritime Studies on foot, going down a flight of steps and walking for about a hundred metres to the main door of the Institute. The lecture will be held in the Conference Room on the top floor of the Institute. Also below, you can find a map of the MCAST Campus with the different buildings. The Institute of Engineering and Transport is building No 3.
This is a great opportunity to all members of the Club to keep abreast with the latest information on the tuition available for users of leisure boats and to get a better understanding on the skills necessary to operate your VHF radio.
